Construction Period:
 2025
 Location:
 Baden bei Wien, Austria

Next to the tracks of the Baden railway and behind a former factory owner’s villa, the house occupies an introverted yet exposed plot between the tram line and the garden. Along the curve of the tram tracks, lined with tall, old trees, a private path tangentially opens up an almost square section of what was once the large garden of a factory owner’s villa. The new house marks the end of this path with its front façade. On one side, the house is in close proximity to the tracks. On the other side, a wall encloses a garden and defines it as an autonomous space shielded from the outside world. This garden forms the conceptual counterpart to the transport infrastructure and can only be reached and perceived via the house.

The house appears to occupy a narrow plot between the railway tracks and the walls. Both dividing and connecting, the house mediates between the garden and the infrastructure. The house consists of a 55 cm thick outer wall made of insulating concrete. This archaic-looking construction is diffusion-open and has no layers. It is the same on the inside and outside. All interior walls and ceilings are made of 15 cm thin reinforced concrete. The pipes for heating in winter and cooling in summer are laid directly into the floor slabs without additional structures.
The entire house is a monolithic, thermally activated mass and has a temperature-regulating effect.

Read MoreClose

In a joint between the house and the wall, the garden wall folds into the building as a wall and defines the entrance. The interior space behind it extends over the entire half of the house facing away from the tracks. Behind the folded wall, it opens lengthwise to the garden. With its dimensions of more than 10 metres in height, almost 12 metres in length and just over 3 metres in width, it forms an empty half.

The garden space functions structurally and spatially as both an interior and exterior space. It is both part of the house and part of the garden. This large space forms the starting point for two staircases. One is centrally located, the other on the periphery. Twisted together like a double helix, they open up the second, full half of the house, in which six rooms on three floors face the railway tracks. Each of these rooms has the same floor space, a large fixed window facing north towards the tracks and a door for ventilation that faces away from the noise. The different lengths of the staircases generate different room heights for these otherwise identical rooms and provide subtle differentiation.

The connections and relationships between them qualify the quantitatively similar rooms. The two staircases provide access to two independent, unconnected parts. From the entrance area, the peripheral staircase leads to two rooms, offset by half a floor. The central staircase leads through one room to a room at the top of the house. Although all these rooms are located above and next to each other, they are perceived as being as far apart from each other as possible. Due to the intertwining of the staircases, both parts adjoin all four sides and extend over all four floors.

Despite the separation, the house is experienced as fragmentary, but always perceived as a whole. The specific spatial qualities create unpredictable and diverse possibilities for appropriating the neutral rooms, thus responding to living conditions that are already almost past or may never occur.

 Location:
 Bezau, Austria

Whole generations of villagers and valley residents have pressed their nose against the large shop windows facing Bezau’s village street to admire the latest photographs. The barn, where cows used to dwell in earlier times, was later home to the business of the Hiller family of photographers. Johann Kaspar Hiller laid the foundation as the Bregenzerwald’s first photographer. His daughter Hedwig later continued the legacy – as Vorarlberg’s first female professional photographer – and commissioned young Bezau architect Leopold Kaufmann to set up her photo studio.

Read MoreClose

The window to the village

The establishment of the photo studio and shop within the former barn of the Bregenzerwälderhaus was to become the long-echoing first work of the architect, who had a major influence on Vorarlberg’s building culture and continued to accompany its development until his passing in 2019. In the mid-1990s, the studio was closed. After 20 years of vacancy, Hedwig decided to rent out her studio to the architects Innauer Matt in 2012, imposing one condition: nothing was to be changed – given Leopold Kauffmann’s architectural brilliance, this wasn’t a difficult task.

Severely affected by long vacancy, wind and weather, the building still had to be revitalized and renovated in 2021. For this purpose, a building collective was founded, dedicated to jointly set their hands to the task. The preservation of the photo studio was the top priority. The typical residential wing could no longer be retained due to its poor condition. Thus, a new house was built around the historic jewel of the photo studio, adopting the formal language of the existing building without any ingratiation. The original division of the Bregenzerwälderhaus – Vorderhaus, Tenne, Hinterhaus – still characterizes the structure of the building, both inside and out. The archetypes are close at hand, the interpretation remains contemporary. Three apartments and the architecture office, which extends over three floors, now share the same roof. A dense structure in its best sense, combining living and working. And although everything now appears new, the original spirit of the exceptional still fills up the walls. Through the large shop windows, it continues to radiate out into the village.

The house stands in the meadow on the edge of buildings and agriculture. The chance to still be part of the landscape with the last building plot – i.e. to live in it – was a determining factor in the design. Similar to the well-known “hay harp”, the building stands in the landscape – characterized by a clear structure and “lightness”.

The psychologist couple, who like to travel in a camper van, wanted a retreat with a connection to the surrounding nature. A one-room house was built on 65 square meters, which opens completely to the landscape to the east, south and west and, on the northern side of the slope, accommodates sleeping alcoves, bathrooms, toilets and cloakrooms in a 140 cm wide layer of space. The one-room is divided into a living, cooking and dining area by furniture and continues to the east and west onto a generously covered terrace. Superstructure and technical equipment are reduced to a minimum and all surfaces are made of untreated spruce wood. The installation cables are bundled compactly in a wall or, where necessary, routed “on wood” – a wood stove serves as the heating source.

Right from the start, the design process was shaped by the search for the adequate answer to the speed and complexity of the contemporary social developments.House Schmieder in Fraxern is completely built in monolithic concrete. The 8×8 meter cube stands separated on a slightly inclined meadow interspersed with cherry trees and is accessed from a small road via a filigree steel bridge. Cooking, living and sleeping areas are spread over three floors and connected by an open staircase. Exposed concrete, raw steel and silver fir are the only materials to find. The external walls are made of 50cm thick isolating concrete. All surfaces are untreated. Any floor construction was waived, the concrete surface was only polished. The construction gave the opportunity to activate the concrete core with a solar heating system, only supported by a centrally located wood stove.

The holiday home is located at an altitude of 1042 meters in Maria Alm. The narrow development specifications that apply to the location, property and design, such as building windows, gable roofs, storeys and eaves heights, are creatively interpreted. The house appears to be well integrated into the surroundings, topography and scale without appearing homely.

The floor plan and section reflect the client’s unconventional wishes in the sequence of low and high rooms, small and wide volumes. Following the topography, you access the house at a medium level and go up to the panoramic level or down to the spatially complex levels. The rooms focus on hillside locations and views, protection and space. Open fireplaces locate the focal points of commonality.

The house is designed as a wooden structure, left raw inside and out. It makes it easier to acquire and awaits patina. The image of the wooden mountain hut with its small retreats and large common areas combines with the requirements of an open and hospitable holiday home.

In the newly composed construction of the old barn, a wooden body is used. The foundation is carried out on reinforced concrete foundations or on the mountain floor using reinforced concrete construction. The walls and the roof folding are constructed of cross-laminated wood. Both structures, the barn and the discontinued wooden building, are self-sufficient. An external black coat of paint provided the new building with the necessary weather resistance and abstracted it. It also creates the necessary contrast to the (comprehensible) block construction of the old city. The thermal insulation of the new building is carried out as part of a vapor-permeable construction using wood fiber insulation materials.

Read MoreClose

The internal wooden cladding of the floor, walls and ceiling was made from local, untreated spruce boards. In keeping with tradition, the floorboards have a brushed surface to achieve the necessary resistance. All furniture and fittings are made of spruce wood and are an integral part of the overall concept – walk-in furniture. The heat is supplied via the central heating of the existing building, the Taxhof. A stove as a single fireplace covers the peak heat requirements. Together with the kitchen stove, it is an expression of center and conviviality.

New room vessels were integrated into the rear building of this well-preserved Bregenzerwald house, which playfully complement the centuries-old building type with high-quality and contemporary lounges. The new building shell appears deliberately reserved and unspectacular compared to the old building in front. Only when stepping onto the raised tuft does the view of the unconventional inner workings open up for the first time.

In contrast to the simple rooms in the front building, each room in the rear building has its own special geometry according to its use. Walking through old and new becomes an everyday experience. Few but high-quality materials are used in the interior design, which means that the economical architecture of our ancestors is taken into account.

(Hinterhaus means rear building – once a stable directly connected to the residential building).

In the course of the expansion of the Hotel Moar Gut, the arrival and the associated entrance area enlarged and reorganized accordingly.
A generous access to the lobby and reception area leads through the underground car park, which acts as a functional interface for the entire area.

The Rauch House is not only a place to live and work, but also a show home where experimental applications of the material earth were tested. After initial attempts of placing the building volume across the slope, the house now stands as an elongated cube in the line of dip of the slope. Two strong incisions form terraces, anchoring the structure on the slope. The design of the clay facades also helps to divide the volume. The brick layers serve as erosion brakes and articulate the top and bottom through differentiating spacing. The prominent window casements are set into the wall, emphasizing its thickness and mediating spatially as a connecting element to the landscape. Thanks to its location on the slope, the northern facade area of the house remains minimal while simultaneously benefitting from the sun’s heat input on the other facades.

The sequence of rooms inside creates a material development that literally rises from the raw and archaic to the noble and exquisite. Access and storage spaces and a guest room with private bathroom are on the lowest level. A colored tiled floor spreads out in the vestibule. The upper floors are accessible via a staircase. A closed railing made of black sheet steel leads upwards with an elegant curve and accompanies the ascent with a gestural movement. The living room, the kitchen and a two-story studio room are located on the piano nobile. On the top floor, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom accessible via a spiral staircase.

None of the rammed earth walls required stabilization and or surface treatment. The design of the house is characterized by the load-bearing properties of the rammed earth walls and the locally sourced, dowelled timber ceilings. The rammed earth walls can only be loaded under pressure without reinforcement. Their strength is created by compressing the excavated material along with the clay contained therein. 85 percent of the building material could be obtained directly from the excavation pit — with the clay walls even consisting entirely of excavated material. By this means, about 50 percent of grey energy compared to a conventional solid construction could be saved. The rammed earth walls further act as a buffer and can guarantee a constantly pleasant indoor climate with a relative humidity of around 50 percent. A buffer storage tank is fed primarily by the roof collectors and via the storage stove with cooking area in the kitchen. A secondary pellet heating system is provided as a back-up should the two other sources not supply enough energy.
