The technical school of wood seized the opportunity of an extension and offered itself a new identity. The project distinguishes between theoretical teaching in the West and practical teaching in the East.

In the DRC, the main access is on the axis of the pre-existing one as vertical traffic. A covered parking lot lifts the building to install the program at the reference level.

The RDJ hosts common and administrative spaces and connects to the existing one by a link.

Upstairs, 4 classes are distributed by a balcony passageway on patios hosting relaxation spaces.

Read MoreClose

A politically committed and militant project!

Without artifice, the project chooses to highlight natural resources, bio-sourced and local. The timber comes from the nearby spruce forests, sawn and cut by the students of the technical school of wood, implemented by a committed and local company. Almost anecdotal but voluntarist, the project located in the Bugey massif summons the Hauteville stone once used to build Lyon, in a raw and expressive implementation to sit down and take off the building.

In the DRC, the base as emanation of the rocky soil, expresses this minerality through the dialogue of a clear concrete and the Hauteville stone. The program, placed on this base, is all wood, local spruce when it is protected, douglas fir when it is exposed to the vertical and chestnut on the horizontal.

Technically, a wood pellet boiler supplies the building and a wood dryer. A technical gallery, backed by land, contains the electrical pathways, fluids and networks of dual flow ventilation – a pragmatic device that saves the project of any plenum.

Volumetry serving the urban project
This parallelogram-shaped lot necessitated the present building with its sharp angle. The location and volumetry of the project seek to soften this angularity by playing with inflection. Along the Rue Gerda Taro, this new building front is intersected by porches atop which winter gardens are placed, allowing light to penetrate from the south and offer views over the green heart of the neighborhood from the street.

The comfort of everyday uses
Occupants enter the building through a porch opening onto a landscaped area offering a perspective deep into the parcel and all the way to the public garden. Circulation inside the building is facilitated by natural light on the façade at the level of the stairs, separated from landings by a glass door. The flats, ranging from 1 to 5 rooms, have been designed to meet different needs and the outdoor extensions vary: loggias, balconies and private terraces. The largest flats enjoy double exposure as they are situated at the angles of the building.

Blended construction methods
Lifecycle and environmental performance guide the construction methods implemented on the project, as evidenced in the elementary association of wooden strips and a concrete post and slab structure. This approach creates open plans that allow for future interior adaptations as needed.

 Location:
 Tremblay-en-France, France

Located in a peaceful zone of detached homes on the south side of the municipality, the Simone Veil school group possesses eight classrooms, a multipurpose room, a school restaurant, an administration area, and a flat for the guardian. On its roof, a playing field is shared with neighborhood associations.

The city’s proposal aimed to replace the traditional ‘leisure centre’ concept, which welcomed children outside school hours, with expanded classes and common areas. Consequently, all school areas are now shared between pupils and preschoolers. The goal was to maintain the same floor area while creating a more spacious, comfortable, and modular facility.

The school’s lobby occupies the heart of the institution. Oriented north-south, it serves the entire establishment up to the playground. More than a simple public area, it was designed as a genuine living space conducive to all forms of learning and exchange. Three alcoves, with varied organisation, increase possibilities of appropriation and encourage and enable diversified methods of learning.

Read MoreClose

The classrooms’ street crosses through the entire facility from east to west, forming another axis structuring the school. Split in two by the interior play area, each part of the axis is embellished with four classrooms and patios. There is a vestibule/cloakroom at each classroom entrance and stands for games, which can be used for pedagogical or playful purposes.

At the intersection of the two axes that structure the school, a large interior play area serves as the genuine central area of the establishment, increasing the number of possible uses. This multi-purpose space can be used in the morning and evening to welcome preschoolers, in addition to the multi-purpose rooms and motricity rooms. In case of heavy rain, it complements the exterior playground but also hosts exhibitions and shows.

The dual-aspect classrooms benefit from multiple sources of natural light and very good ventilation. Their positioning between patios to the north and the school playground to the south ensures different ambiances in the same classroom. To the north, with light pouring in from the patio, a shared space built of wood between two classes creates a peaceful and calm area. To the south, the largest volume of the classes directly overlooking the playground is more collective. Each classroom also benefits from a ‘private’ play area overlooking the ‘common’ playground.

This shaded area improves flows between the interior and exterior, becoming a real extension of the classrooms. The playground, situated to the south and shaded by a line of trees, is shared between kindergarten and elementary classes. A genuine green setting, it is an ideal framework for the discovery of nature and outdoor games. A space dedicated to biodiversity, laid out on the roof, completes the exterior spaces made available. It includes tubs for growing vegetables and large picnic tables, favoring teaching activities related to the natural world. Finally, the playing field will also be accessible during recreation times, thus encouraging the practice of physical activities.

By definition, a school building must make its commitment to the environment visible. This principle has been applied to the project in both the choice of materials and the functioning of the building. The school’s load-bearing stone façades come from the Bonneuil-en-Valois quarry, located less than 60km from the construction site. Its thickness ensures the building’s thermal inertia while enhancing the value of the facility’s sculpted volumes. Between the classrooms, mud bricks are added to the wooden structure, increasing the visibility of natural and bio-sourced materials in the building’s construction.

The patios embellish and punctuate the common areas to the extent that all the spaces of the project benefit from very good natural lighting, fresh air, and comfortable humidity. Their placement naturally ventilates all the areas designed for children, as well as the common areas, which can then become genuine inhabited places and learning areas. The roof of the sporting area is equipped with photovoltaic panels producing more energy than the building consumes. The rest of the roof is planted, which improves thermal performance and total rainwater retention, while also providing inhabitants of the neighborhood with attractive views.

 Location:
 Romanel-sur-Lausanne, France

The temporary building with eight classrooms is spread over two floors connected by a covered gallery. The building takes advantage of its location in Prazquéron park by offering classrooms with double exposure and access to the outside. Built using prefabricated wooden modules, the construction system allows for quick and efficient assembly. Although the structure is temporary and removable, the focus is on creating high-quality, comfortable teaching spaces, challenging the container-type solutions often used for this type of project.

The temporary school in Romanel-sur-Lausanne responds to an urgent need due to the village’s population growth. The four classrooms on the ground floor were delivered at the start of the 2023 school year. The wooden structure allows for great flexibility to adapt to future needs. This quality has already been put to good use for the start of the 2025 school year, with the addition of an extra floor housing four new classrooms. Each floor was exceptionally designed and built in just a few months to meet the continuous influx of new pupils into the municipality.

Read MoreClose

Modular timber construction was the natural choice for this project. The school was built by assembling prefabricated elements, allowing for rapid assembly and leaving the possibility of dismantling, reconfiguration or recycling with minimal waste. The prefabricated wooden pavilion rests delicately on masonry bases, which allow
the structure to be raised slightly and ensure optimal ventilation. The heating system is integrated directly into the floor elements. The prefabricated wooden walls, which have fire-retardant properties, delimit the classroom spaces around the central core.
The structure is reinforced by a system of solid wooden posts and slender metal posts supporting the eaves along the edge of the covered gallery.

The large glass façades provide a direct visual connection to the park and a quality of light that is favourable for classroom activities. Each room has dual orientation and direct access to the outside. The gallery surrounding the building provide a buffer zone with the outside and form effective sunshades to prevent overheating during periods of high heat. Despite its temporary nature, the pavilion offers high-quality, comfortable teaching spaces that comply with current standards.

This project was carried out thanks to close collaboration between the project owner, the architect and partner contractors. Smooth communication and coordination between the various parties involved enabled this ambitious project to be completed within a very short timeframe. The speed of design and construction, with two months of construction work for each floor, made it possible to address the saturation of existing school facilities and growing demographic pressure.

 Construction Period:
 2025
 Location:
 Rochefort-du-Gard, France

The Saint-Joseph Chapel was built, expanded, and modified between 1638 and 1734, replacing a modest hermitage and using stones from the Castellas Castle, which had been destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Since the French Revolution, the chapel has been repurposed multiple times as a town hall, school, and municipal office. In 1995, the attached residential building was demolished, creating a small square at the corner of Rue de l’Église and Rue du Grand Pont. This open space in the dense urban fabric of Rochefort-du-Gard’s historic center had remained underutilized.

Supporting the Transformation of the Historic Center through culture
The square is bordered to the east by the Saint-Joseph Chapel—used as the town hall until it was closed in 2017 due to structural risks—and to the south by a derelict, windowless barn.
The renovation and extension of the Saint-Joseph Chapel into a Third-Place Library marks a significant urban act—preserving heritage while revitalizing the village’s daily life, which has been impacted by population decline in favor of surrounding areas.
The primary goal was to bring the community of Rochefort-du-Gard together around a vibrant cultural identity. The project is organized around the village square, establishing a strong relationship with the library’s ground floor to enable cultural events to extend outdoors.
The north façade, fitted with accordion-style folding glass doors, opens completely to foster engagement with the town, blurring boundaries and expanding possibilities.
A bridge connects the new library to the rehabilitated Saint-Joseph Chapel, which now houses a digital museum. The museum will host diverse educational workshops throughout the year, centered around various cultural themes.

Read MoreClose

A Contemporary Rural Identity
The materials of the extension reflect a layered duality.
At ground level, the mass of the concrete base forms a protective plinth that echoes the village’s stone architecture. The walls are bush-hammered to develop a texture and patina that harmonize with the surrounding masonry. Concrete is also used for its structural strength, allowing a span of over fifteen meters so that the library’s boundary disappears entirely when the folding doors are opened.
The upper level is built with a wooden post-and-beam structure, adding lightness while allowing for overhangs and discreet rainwater management. The metal roof adjusts to the neighboring parcel’s geometry, sloping gently toward the square and reducing the volume’s scale near the historic chapel.
In contrast with the chapel’s opaque façade, the library emphasizes horizontal transparency with large windows that invite residents to enter and take part in this new cultural energy.

Interior bias
The interior spaces are designed with clarity and restraint. The library’s identity emerges from its raw materials and the legibility of its construction.
At ground level, the exterior paving continues inside, leading to a central service spine marked by concrete columns. This zone includes restrooms, reception, vertical circulation, and technical rooms. Wood infill is used to enclose these spaces, incorporate built-in furniture, and route utility networks. This alternating rhythm creates a flexible, modular layout.
Upstairs, timber portals align with the window frames and guide views toward the village square below. The ceiling structure—comprising pine rafters and panels—forms the underside of a calm reading area.
The central service spine continues on the upper level, integrating more technical spaces. Wood paneling is used throughout, creating a warm, uniform backdrop that highlights the books and cultural displays. The upper floor thus has a distinct identity, offering a contrast to the ground level and enabling varied atmospheres within the same building.
The Saint-Joseph Chapel has been fully restored: the main vaults reinforced, and new tension rods with hidden anchor plates installed. A patina wash was applied to the interior walls, restoring visual coherence while preserving the original stone texture.
New wooden furniture houses all the necessary digital museum equipment and delineates the director’s office, which is open to the exhibition space. A large pendant light completes the understated intervention—preserving the chapel’s spatial quality while reimagining it as a contemporary cultural venue.

The Third-Place Library acts as a bridge between an important heritage of the Village of Rochefort-du-Gard and a new facility resolutely open and focused on making culture available to all.

The Lot 8 project is a collaboration between BC architects & studies & materials, Assemble and Atelier LUMA. The ‘Magasin Electrique’ is a 2100m2 former 19th century train depot building, and has been renovated to provide a new workspace for the design and research laboratory Atelier Luma, including workshops for timber, metal, ceramic, and textile, alongside dedicated algae and mycelium laboratories, meeting rooms, desk and production space, library and resource centre.

Atelier LUMA is the design research program of LUMA Foundation. Based in the Parc des Ateliers in Arles, France, since 2017, it is deeply connected to its geographic and cultural environment: the Camargue region, the Alpilles mountains, and the Crau plains.

“Through investigating the resources and know-how in our bioregion, and connecting different fields of expertise, Atelier Luma develops local solutions for ecological, economic, and social transition”.

Working in close collaboration, the team set out an ambition to create a flagship piece of bioregional design, presenting a new attitude towards materials, promoting and highlighting innovation in bioregional design practice. The project is developed in collaboration with local stakeholders, it is drawing from regional know-how and resources, and it aims to create lasting impact through training programs and transmission projects.

 2025
 Location:
 Erstein, France

The project proposes:

The creation of a Nordic pool with six stainless steel swimming lanes, built to the dimensions specified in the program, resulting in a water surface of 15m x 25m with variable depth.

Installing the Nordic pool and surrounding deck at the same elevation level as the existing indoor pool deck.

Placing the Nordic pool at the heart of a strongly characterized outdoor space perceived as a patio or an “open-air room.” This new area is an outdoor space experienced as a warm interior, a refined setting that houses the stainless steel pool. It is also a natural extension of the existing pool hall, with a direct dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. The walls of this outdoor room form the boundary with public space to the north and east. A light-colored raw concrete wall, plank-formwork cast, ensures privacy between inside and outside. This wall supports a “servant” thickness that houses lockers, changing rooms, showers, and storage. The whole area is protected by a lightweight canopy made of wood and zinc.

Read MoreClose

The bather’s path from the summer outdoor entrance (located as close as possible to the main entrance) is intuitively guided without being constrained, with direct views toward the pool and easy supervision from the pool area toward the changing rooms. On the side of the existing pool, a large glass façade with an accordion-style opening shifts the boundary of the pool hall to the eastern edge of the new canopy. In winter, the glass façade is closed, and the indoor pool deck expands, offering opportunities for strolling or resting with views either toward the steaming Nordic pool or the large indoor hall. In summer, the glass walls fold back, and the transition and usage between indoor and outdoor areas become seamless and obvious.

On the south side of the Nordic pool, there is a direct view of the grassy beaches and the wooded landscape. Two carefully aligned footbaths within the wall thickness ensure smooth transitions between the summer changing rooms and the pool deck, and between the grassy and paved poolside areas.

The technical facilities are grouped in a new building extension on the eastern side of the site. This building is ideally positioned to ensure technical connections with the pool. It is built on several levels to meet specific needs efficiently and is accessible from the street, facilitating deliveries of consumables and maintenance of equipment.

Located on the heights of Dieppe, the Oscar Niemeyer Sports and Cultural Centre represents the revival of Val Druel district. Named after the master plan’s designer, the project incorporates the natural slope creating a balcony which reveals landscape qualities. Its refined shape accentuates the surroundings, as the pétanque strip terrace and the nearby woods.

The main space offers a seven metres ceiling height and a three-sided view. Inner activities can be seen from the car park and the pedestrian lanes, passers-by can even look through the building. The separation between inside and outside is blurred, the Centre itself provides an alternative walk connecting the lower and higher esplanades. Design sobriety is balanced by attention to detail and quality of materiality.

The project combines raw materials (cast concrete, larch wood, white painted hollow bricks) and produces a kind of preciousness, as witnessed by the oblique line carved in concrete to guide visitors towards the entrance hall, or by circles of light which underline the acroterion at nightfall, reminding curtain folds.

This construction is a house for a retired couple.
They are settling in a private development by the Atlantic Ocean. The layout avoids cutting down the trees of the Landes forest.
The land is preserved in its original state of undergrowth.

The construction is compact and creates its own outdoor space within the built area.
This patio separates a part of the house that is inhabited year-round from an outbuilding for family and friends. Two sliding glass gates intimate this place.
The house is built with a wooden frame and wooden posts/beams on a polished concrete slab.
The roof is a membrane that meets the flat roof requirement of the development.
The anodized aluminum window frames open only onto the patio.
Roof frames allow natural light and ventilation into the heart of each part.
This house extracts itself from its development context to reconnect with the original forest life.
