At the entrance to Endingen, the little river Surb forms a small landscape chamber between the hills that draw together in the valley. Inside this idyllic setting, one hardly notices the surrounding bustle of single-family homes and residential streets. Instead, it feels as though one were in a natural landscape: birds are singing, trees cast their shadows, and behind you rises a sun-warmed rock face.

Alongside the natural rock formation on the northern side, the river, and the mill canal, several buildings protected as cantonal monuments define the area. Together they form an ensemble that is listed in the national inventory of heritage sites of importance. With its elongated overall form, the project continues the structure of this ensemble and extends the existing built fabric. Toward the rock face, the articulation of the volume gives it the flexibility to follow the natural line of the ground and to create a series of spatial sequences full of tension and rhythm.

To integrate optimally into the complementary surroundings of the sunny south and rocky north, the main living spaces extend transversely through the building volume. Their dual orientation allows the entire landscape chamber to be experienced. The continuous living space is offset in such a way that two interlocking living areas are created.

The two lodgings were developed in a stone quarry in the town of Baños de Agua Santa.
The land is nestled under the shadow of the Tungurahua Volcano, which was active for 20 years. Beside it flows the Pastaza River.

The property is divided into two sections, each with a distinct logic.
(1) The area where quarrying took place, which represents about 40% of the land. It stretches from the upper part down to the riverbed. Dump trucks, excavators, vibrating screens, and large volumes of stone dominate the surrounding landscape.
(2) The remaining area is either untouched or undergoing environmental remediation. This section holds various ecosystems with native vegetation. Due to the presence of different climate zones, the vegetation shifts accordingly: at higher elevations, achupallas and low Andean plants prevail; in the lower, shaded zones, where natural springs emerge, the vegetation is lush and humid.

Read MoreClose

A shift in model.
The family that owns the land is currently focused on transitioning from an extractive model toward one of ecological conservation. Their vision involves adventure tourism, taking advantage of the towering volcanic rock walls for climbing. They’ve introduced camping areas, and now, lodgings.

Lodgings that carry the memory of a quarry.
All obsolete items left behind by the quarry have been repurposed and revalued, forming a dialogue between time and memory that defines this unique context. The character of the lodgings is inseparable from that of the quarry itself.

In this process of spatial remediation, materials come from three sources:
(1) The natural context – The massive stones placed on site are remnants and absences of what was once extracted over the years; they now serve as structural supports. Along the 50-meter-high, 400-meter-wide cliff wall, flat stones have been deposited — these were used for the sinks. Gravel and sand were reused in walkways and outdoor spaces.

(2) Recycled materials – Vibrating screens and old oil pipeline tubes now serve as structural elements. Metal parts, carved stones, rods, and timbers (such as staves and beams) were salvaged from old constructions in Baños. A thick roll of steel cable, a scoop, small digger teeth, and other machinery spare parts were also reused. These recycled elements embrace the new visitors, creating spaces with the spirit and soul of the quarry while harmonizing with the native vegetation.

(3) The volcano – New pine and colorado wood provide the spatial quality and comfort needed for the interior of the lodgings and the shared dining area. The structures are built using two large trusses prefabricated on the ground — simple to make and easy to lift. The overall experience is that of an observatory, one that looks directly out at the Tungurahua Volcano, enhancing its majesty and grounding the visitor deeply in the spirit of the place.

 Location:
 Babahoyo, Ecuador

In Ecuador, several centuries ago, the Babahoyo River and its floating houses became one of the main gathering, storage, and resting points on the commercial route for merchants and farmers between the cities of Guayaquil and Quito, using a construction system with greater resilience and adaptability over the years.

Currently, the river is no longer a commercial waterway, reducing the number of floating structures from 200 to 25 and increasing the risk of their extinction, despite being recognized as Intangible Heritage of Ecuador.

During the last few years, the governments have developed housing solutions for relocation and displacement, declaring the riverbanks as a risk zone, without considering the consequences on the socio-cultural dynamics based on fishing, boat manufacturing, and river transportation. The inhabitants of the remaining 25 houses feel the need to preserve their connection with their territory, despite the unsatisfied basic needs and the absence of public policies that promote the care of their habitat.

Read MoreClose

The objective is to propose a model of floating housing for Mr. Carlos, Mrs. Teresa, and their youngest son. A family that has been living on the river for over 30 years and uses the immediate ecosystem as their main resource.

Carlos repairs wooden boats, while Teresa prepares traditional food, which is sold to local communities. The housing they lived in presented a critical condition in its structure and provision of basic services, preventing them from carrying out their livelihood activities in a dignified and sustainable manner.

Processes and techniques. A survey is conducted of their current living spaces and an inventory is made of the existing furniture and their uses. Through interviews with Carlos and Teresa, the problems, needs, and possible solutions are further explored, with the aim of utilizing them.

La Balsanera proposes extending 2m on each side of the current platform (6mx7m) to enhance the productive environments of the inhabitants. The structure consists of modular frames every 2m built with local wood, forming a gable roof, creating storage spaces and sufficient height for the enhancement of natural ventilation and lighting through its wooden lattice boundaries.

The existing location of private and social spaces such as the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms is preserved in the center, while two strips are added to the ends; one for service and two for productive purposes, where the boat workshop, dry toilet, laundry, toilet, and shower are located. The platform ends towards the river with a productive terrace where the possibility of extending the traditional food service, social gathering, and anchoring of tourist boats is generated.

Management and approach. The SAT (Sharjah Architectural Triennial) calls on architecture teams to develop an exhibition that values the importance of scarcity, reuse of resources, and the appreciation of ancestral techniques based on nature in the Global South, including the Natura Futura studio, which in collaboration with Juan Carlos Bamba decides to use the resources commonly used in ephemeral constructions and later discarded to design and build the first sustainable floating house in Babahoyo, Ecuador with the aim of recovering the tradition of inhabiting the river.

La Balsanera explores possible floating solutions that recover local artisanal techniques while enhancing the active and productive participation of occupants in vulnerable communities, where it is urgent to strengthen their resilience and sustainability to initiate the generation of public policies that allow, for the first time, traditional habitat on the river.

 Location:

The Noucentista House in the centre of Igualada is conceived as a residence adaptable to the passage of time, which maintains its historical essence while transforming to respond to the needs of its inhabitants. A comprehensive reform is proposed on the inside, preserving the exterior intact and thus maintaining the heritage value of this work, representative of the architectural ideals of Noucentisme. This movement sought to express modernity, Mediterraneanness and civility, values that the house reflects both in its design and in its harmonious relationship with the urban context.

The intervention is based on an energetic and functional study of each environment. The day and night spaces are distributed on different floors: the day areas on the ground floor and the night area in the basement, linked by a thermal cushion facing north, in the form of a staircase, which provides continuity between the two. In addition, a well-equipped garden at the back revitalizes the interior façade, offering an outdoor space that frees and enriches the environment of the house.

Read MoreClose

To take advantage of the excellent orientation of the house and maximize the entry of natural light, two patios have been created. The first ventilates the wet areas and brings light into the rooms; the second extends alongside the staircase from the roof to the basement, marking a clear entrance from the street and serving as an acoustic buffer against outside noise.

The project stands out for highlighting the heritage elements of the house, leaving visible traces of its history. By removing the lime plaster that covered the walls, the original stone is revealed, which now becomes a central element of the design. Likewise, the ceramic tile ceiling and traditional wooden beams have been respected and exposed, providing warmth and authenticity to the spaces. On the other hand, the original hydraulic floors function as decorative carpets that allow us to sense the old layout of the house, creating a link between the past and the present. These heritage elements dialogue with modern materials, such as wooden floors and walls, which fulfill a utilitarian function without overshadowing the true protagonist: the heritage elements of the house.

 Construction Period:
 2023
 Location:
 Yungay, Perú

This solitary figure functions as a signal and as a viewpoint of the landscape (both interior and exterior). With a vertical sequence of rooms, it was built to overlook the Andes Mountain Range, hidden behind the native forest.

Its format is that of a slender volume, formed in turn by two towers: the lower one with an overhang that duplicates its roof, and the upper one with a terrace that duplicates its floor.

The floor and ceiling are a horizontal slab projected halfway up the elevation, a thin cantilevered plane that extends towards the four cardinal points, with the difficult function of containing a shallow rainwater pond.

Read MoreClose

Thus, this slab becomes a mirror that reflects the upper section of the tower, the sky, and the surrounding trees; but it also transfigures into a fictitious glass, into a transparency, suggesting the presence of the lower tower.

And even more difficult: like a permanent cloud, the slab casts a dense and compact shadow over the lower tower, and even sometimes the rain falls all around the perimeter due to the overflow of the small pond.

Paradoxically, the function of the viewpoint is reversed inside the tower. Instead of framing the sublime panorama, perhaps tempering an imposing presence, access to the suspended platform occurs through a spiral staircase that revolves around a continuous mural of vines, both live and painted, depicting a selection of thirty interconnected native flowers on the same tree.

After the platform, a feeble wooden ladder allows climbing up to a dark room with four peepholes, a sort of intricate camera obscura, which in turn serves as a passage to an open, overexposed roof, with a hearth that, at the proper distance, could turn the entire tower into an antiquated chimney.

The commission, with no further programmatic definition than that of a space for a grand meal, is approached as the design of a pavilion.

Everything is organized around a square courtyard that encloses an existing oak tree. The courtyard acts as a rotational center around which various elements are arranged, setting the rhythm for activities and spaces. Inverting the square-circle relationship of Mantegna’s house, the square plan of the courtyard is framed, in its opening to the sky, by a circle. The square re-emerges in the roof, defined by the beams that support the covering. Positioned at the center of each side of the square, cruciform columns—like those of the Barcelona Pavilion—support the roof.

Concrete walls and ceilings, along with a polished monolithic floor, establish a neutral, monomaterial condition. As a counterpoint of color, singular elements and the captured nature are introduced. The reflections on polished surfaces blur the boundary between inside and outside.

This residential building in the San Pedro de los Pinos neighborhood of Mexico City seeks to achieve high urban density with 9 units on a lot that is 10m wide and 45m deep. In order to maximize the entry of light and avoid high and narrow ventilation cubes, 8 units were grouped vertically around 2 shared courtyards (the ninth unit faces the street). This scheme generates a typology of vertical units of 4 levels in which the staircase acts as a dynamic element that filters light into the depth of the dwelling. The vertical typology also allows each house to have a variety of outdoor spaces: a patio on the first floor, French balconies and a terrace on the intermediate levels and a roof garden.

These vertical units are accessed from a wide, high internal corridor, full of vegetation and open to the outdoors, thus avoiding stairs or public elevators in the complex. It is a meeting space in direct contact with the street through a large glazed facade and directly supervised by the doorman. Both the interior and exterior facades of the residential complex consist of a system of vertical brackets between which planters, railings and sunshades are placed to provide privacy and protect the interiors from the sun. These red corrugated sheet metal elements and the abundant vegetation generate kaleidoscopic urban courtyards of multiple levels, dimensions and perspectives.

The Jingyang Camphor Court creates a tranquil courtyard in the heart of Jingdezhen (Jiangxi province), a city historically well-known for its porcelain production. The site is located in a bustling part of the city and is characterized by the presence of ongoing industrial heritage renewal projects around it. The site featured industrial relics such as a long and narrow industrial building, a few mechanical rooms, a dormitory, and a dilapidated pavilion. In and around these structures, camphor trees had grown to maturity. The retention of these trees became the basic premise of the project.

The design and organization of the hotel are different from most since the client requested that more than half of the program be open to the public. The arrangement and massing of both the existing and new volumes are designed with this criterion in mind. The hotel has the spirit of an urban public living room accompanied by a hospitality experience that is culture and human-oriented.

Read MoreClose

The central part of the Jingyang Camphor Court consists of a wooden cloister encircling the lush camphor trees, which establishes a unique atmosphere at the core of the complex. All new hotel programs such as verandas, guest rooms, conference spaces, and restaurants are arranged around and connected to this central cloister. site limitations, no other large public spaces other than the cloister could be created. The distances between the walls of the different volumes are very narrow, akin to the narrow width between the exterior walls of local vernacular buildings. By putting all buildings in close proximity to each other, an intimate, personal, and nostalgic atmosphere is created, with guests able to discover the different material tonalities arranged along a path, like wandering through a maze.

The hotel’s western area features a new courtyard-type building with the three buildings’ gable walls advancing and retreating to form small public plazas in front of them. From the exterior, these buildings’ subtle setback from the existing straight street draws the guests and public in. The entrance is located on the east of the site and has a deliberately low and unassuming profile, in accordance with the presence of trees and folded canopies. The subtle and human-oriented scale creates an intimate and welcoming atmosphere upon arrival. The hotel rooms are located in the old dormitory space, north of the central courtyard. Its walls were kept, while a new structure penetrates and juts out of the existing volume. Each hotel room has a balcony that faces the interior courtyard and the promenade spaces between the buildings.

The new restaurant is located in the former factory structure in the southern part of the site. The original side walls of this industrial relic were kept and thermal and sound insulation were added. Besides overall structural reinforcements, a new metal roof structure was added to increase the buildings’ safety. The ceiling height was also increased, and new skylights were introduced, creating a more pleasant and contemporary spatial atmosphere for guests while also paying homage to the site’s industrial past.

The bricks of the original structures had a red and orange hue. We wanted to honor this palette when opting for the tonality of the new buildings. Throughout the hotel, we used warm-colored concrete and a thin layer of tiles with a similar gradient. The external walls of the old and new volumes are a mix of kiln and old clay bricks and between the old and the new bricks, a warm-colored concrete is cast in place to create a harmonious transition between the preserved elements and those newly added. Their materiality, color, and texture are closely related to the history of porcelain production in Jingdezhen.

The Jingyang Camphor Court creates a new type of hotel experience with a publicly accessible courtyard that is as large as possible. Next to creating a tranquil and natural environment, the strategy of preservation, renovation, and revitalization of an existing warehouse was central for the arrangement and massing of new programs and creating a new and inviting atmosphere and future for this hotel.

The Equilibri restaurant project creates atmospheres; it aims to speak of the old and the new, of memory and what already exists, of strength and fragility. Each layer of this project is counterbalanced by its opposite. The mirror is the point of union between the two. It is equilibrium.

The space retains the memory of what once was. The strategic placement of a mirror reflects the trusses, allowing a connection to that past which is no longer there, and restores the true scale of the space, unifying what was once mutilated.

The entrance to the space is narrow and dark. Gradually, the walls shed their materials until they are reduced to skin and bones upon reaching the main hall. The program places the open kitchen at the back of the premises. Folding enables illumination: paper is folded for the lamps, metal is bent to filter the light, and wood is folded over the kitchen.

A baseboard made of thermoclay accompanies the entire path, acting as a foundation where the tables—balanced and ready to host the ritual of eating—can be placed.

 Location:

The new library of Los Molinos is part of an ambitious project framed within a public competition won by DIIR studio in 2018. The main desire of the project is to adapt the entire complex – a former school group – to the needs of the present.

In this way, what was formerly conceived to accommodate a specific program completely changes its use. Thus, the playground becomes a public square, the classrooms become a cultural center, or, as is the case in this project, the former teachers’ dormitories become a municipal library.

When intervening, the entire first floor is acted upon with the aim of incorporating this space into the cultural activity of the building. A new communication nucleus is designed, whose semicircular shape is attached to the building in the center of the configuration.

Read MoreClose

Coinciding with the arrival area, a reception space is proposed that completes the semicircle and constructs its outline through a wooden bench. From this point, the user connects with a kind of large hallway, which acts as a backbone and provides access to each of the rooms. This entire strip is covered with wooden paneling that gives presence and seems to emphasize, to a greater extent, access to each of the programs.

The warmth of the wood on the vertical surfaces and the colorful linoleum red on certain floors contrast with the neutrality of the rest of the tones. White covers the majority of walls and ceilings and gives prominence to the unique vaulted roof.
