At the entrance to Endingen, the little river Surb forms a small landscape chamber between the hills that draw together in the valley. Inside this idyllic setting, one hardly notices the surrounding bustle of single-family homes and residential streets. Instead, it feels as though one were in a natural landscape: birds are singing, trees cast their shadows, and behind you rises a sun-warmed rock face.

Alongside the natural rock formation on the northern side, the river, and the mill canal, several buildings protected as cantonal monuments define the area. Together they form an ensemble that is listed in the national inventory of heritage sites of importance. With its elongated overall form, the project continues the structure of this ensemble and extends the existing built fabric. Toward the rock face, the articulation of the volume gives it the flexibility to follow the natural line of the ground and to create a series of spatial sequences full of tension and rhythm.

To integrate optimally into the complementary surroundings of the sunny south and rocky north, the main living spaces extend transversely through the building volume. Their dual orientation allows the entire landscape chamber to be experienced. The continuous living space is offset in such a way that two interlocking living areas are created.

The Canton of Zurich wanted to add a new building to its waterways engineering operations center to house vehicles and machines and to serve as a workshop for carrying out detail work. The concept for the building draws on traditional agricultural construction while at the same time, so to speak, realizing a childhood dream: stacking up and layering simple wooden blocks to build an elementary structure. The workshop is made up of 36 solid wood elements. Each element has its own structural effect, protecting the space and forming part of the whole. Everything that is necessary is there, with nothing superfluous added. The solid timber support structure is visible both inside and out. Restraint is the creative byword here. But the simplicity is anything but ordinary.

The workshop draws on the principles of log construction taking it to new and undreamt-of dimensions. The wooden elements can be interconnected on the building site in only two days, so that what are for the most part soft components come together to form a stable structure.

“The workshop is a statement of reduction of means, creating a sculptured body made of piled up load-bearing elements. Everything that is necessary is there, with nothing superfluous added. The only wooden structure relates to the oldest buildings in Switzerland and is AAA sustainable. The timber used regrows in Switzerland in 18 minutes”.
