Architects: JOYS Architects Photography: Beersingnoi
			Construction Period:
			2022
			Location:
			Pak Chong, Thailand

Yellow House is situated in a sloped area that is surrounded by a lot of big trees scattered all over the site. The house consists of two main parts. The first is the “inner spaces,” composed of highly private functions. And they are surrounded by “outer spaces,” which are composed of less private functions. The “outer spaces” are open-air courts that are situated on four sides of the house.

This court allows daylight and air into the “inner spaces.” All four courts have their own character in terms of scale and dimension, depending on their orientation to maintain the existing trees and slope of the ground. And because of the courts’ position, they have their own functions and define the functions of the area around them. Such as:

Read MoreClose

• The “Welcome Court,” which is located at the front of the house and is +0.30 meters high, so this court acts as a shielded court that slightly hides the inner space (the living room) from the outside. and it also acts as an accessway to the kitchen due to the not-too-high ground level (0.30 meters).
• The “Inner Court,” has a counter and table around it because its ground-level height is 0.70 meters. That height is suitable for making a working table or counter, so functions around it like a dining and working area.
• The “Pool,” which is different from the other court because this court does not have any existing trees at the location, so it is not necessary to keep the land level for keeping any trees. The court is dug 1.10 m for a pool. And this pool also creates functions around it, like a relaxing area and a bath area.
• The “service court,” which is at the same level as the house (0.00), is used as a court that can be easily accessed from inside, so it acts as a service court for support utility and maid rooms around it.

In addition, all the courts not only create functions around them but also connect the surrounding area. So, the “outer spaces” are connected to a circular area around the “inner space.” The court and its surrounding space are dissolved by daylight and fresh air, which flows from one space to another. In the same way, the view of space is connected by material, which is the “concrete skin”.

“Concrete Skin” is used to link inside and outside space together due to duration and time reasons. Concrete is cast on top of the brick wall. The concrete skin is strong enough for weathering. So, the exterior and interior walls are all the same when time passes. It makes a connection between inside and outside spaces.

			Construction Period:
			2023
			Location:
			Chiang Mai, Thailand

The house is situated in a residential area beside the river surrounded by trees. To the east, it is bordered by a road, while its west side offers a direct view of the Riverbend. This calm and natural setting extends along the river’s axis, forming a backdrop visible across the property. A uniform grid of columns supports the extensive concrete slab, which defines and divides the spaces beneath. From the street, the house appears as a closed and unassuming box. However, when the gate-like exterior wall is opened, the central earthen floor, the river, the garden, and the street merge into one unified space.

Read MoreClose

Beneath the roof, the home encompasses three primary areas, defined by sliding doors and walls arranged in the center of the column grid. This layout creates a fluid, non-hierarchical division of spaces. In the center of the house is an earthen floor that allows water to seep through, naturally cooling the surrounding spaces as the wind flows. Above, the rooftop acts as an environmental device, equipped with solar panels, a steel frame for hanging agricultural sun-shading fabric, and ventilated floor blocks to protect the living spaces from direct sunlight.

Architecture is a transformative tool, merging common elements and integrating natural and industrial resources. This creates a space where various components—earth, plants, wind, rain, creatures, and people—come together into a microcosm of coexistence. A place of diversity is enabled by the simple yet versatile structure of the grid and flat slab, allowing each component to exist in a flexible, ever-evolving ecology. More than just a structure, this house is a durable and open-ended living entity that constantly adapts, maintaining a delicate balance between the elements, its inhabitants, and the surrounding environment.

Architects: Yangnar Studio Photography: Rungkit Charoenwat
			Construction Period:
			2022
			Location:
			Nam Phrae, Thailand

Deep within the entrance to Obkhan National Park lies a compact wooden platform house. This is the result of the thinking and operational method of the Yangnar Studio team who wants to create an experimental architecture. Despite the constraints imposed also show the craftsmanship shines of Yangnar Studio’s aesthetic shows due to the location and a limited budget, which both had a significant impact and were essential in determining the architectural design.

The wooden structure is elevated on a compacted soil-lifted ground, borrowing the design language of “Ka-Nham”, a temporary shelter for gardeners in southern Thailand. The interior space can be used as a residence and the area around the house can be used for other activities.

Read MoreClose

The building comprises an elongated terrace, serving as a connecting element between various sections. The stairs on both sides facilitate movement, while the height of the terrace provides seating arrangements. The terrace links the kitchen, bathroom, and two separate rooms, ensuring privacy through the inclusion of staircases. Additionally, an elevated den is incorporated to serve as a versatile space in front of the main room, distinct from the secondary room.

Despite the challenges presented by a limited budget and the site’s remote condition. Yangnar team reach the meticulous details of woodwork both working based on fundamental materials. Their expertise is evident in the construction techniques of old woodwork. They avoid chemical coating to preserve the wood’s natural essence and use readily available main building materials sourced from local stores. Another important construction resource is recycling material shops that supplied elements such as old wooden doors, windows, and steel tube profile materials, they are skillfully adapted to harmonize with specific aspects of the house, including roof poles, fall protection railings, and interior decoration. Antique market finds are thoughtfully arranged for decorative purposes and practical use. Notably, the team has ingeniously repurposed old wooden pillars from vernacular houses in the Vietnam zone to adapt to the front stair, seamlessly integrating them with the site’s stone steps.

The architectural constraints imposed by the project have consistently led to captivating and experimental outcomes. While an unrestricted building may be the aspiration of many architects, certain teams thrive on limitations, harnessing them to unlock their creative potential. The Baan Ing Suk building poses a simple question: What kind of architecture can we create within the confines of budgetary and locational constraints? Coupled with resource utilization within the building’s vicinity. the team firmly believes that in the future, greater attention will be directed towards, and inquiries made into the inventive utilization of available resources by professional architects. The pursuit of meaning behind each edifice will become increasingly paramount.
