Despite its small dimension, the cabin includes a series of functions which determine its formal solutions. It’s a shed, where the firewood required by the client’s house heating system is stored. The air passing through the planks of the building’s shell ensures the collected wood to dry.

It’s a shelter, a refuge, a place that provides interaction between the private but open courtyard and the outside public space. A center of gravity around which the life of the clients and the inhabitants of the small hamlet takes place: the niche on the south facade is a special seat for humans an animals.

Read MoreClose

It’s a working space and a service zone for the outdoor area. The reinforced concrete wall that defines part of the east elevation folds inwards to create a surface where a large sink has been positioned.

It’s a spatial delimitation device, an edge that defines zones and mediates uses. The wall of the previous cabin, with its uneven and stratified texture has been maintained and consolidated in order to sustain the new construction. Light gray coating covers the old masonry to unify and underline that presence.

Details are basic. Definitions are literal. Reinforced concrete is used for base and wall. Wood for almost everything else: laminated wood for structure, burned chestnut for skin and roof, untreated chestnut for frames, plywood for inserts and niche, an old trunk became a step. A poor quality iron frame defines the door.In the end it’s only a wall, a box with a niche, a door and its window, two pivots, a step and a handle. Almost nothing else.

Designed by Gion A. Caminada, the building is located in the forest and adjoins a glade to the west, which opens onto the valley. A slightly ascending path leads over a pasture and along the edge of the forest to the hut. It is located in an area known as “Plong Vaschnaus”, Switzerland, near the rhine confluence. In the immediate vicinity contradictory conditions meet. The grassland below the hut is crossed by high-voltage pylons and dominated by the noise of the neighboring gravel. Above the hut is dense forest, which merges into mountainous terrain.

 Construction Period:
 2013
 Location:
 Shizuoka, Japan

This is an extension plan for a young couple’s house next to the main house. The main house is a one story Japanese style house with about 200m2, which is commonly seen in rural areas. It is a big house with many rooms and mainly consists of large spaces for people to gather and to provide hospitality. However, the young couple desired feelings of ease and spaces that ensure quiet and comfortable times. A simple extension may enable each of the house’s residents to live completely separated, but the relationship between the families and the connection with the main house might be lost. Therefore, by utilizing the functions for living in the main house, the extension is designed as a minimum living space, and pursues both maintaining distance and retaining fertile relationships.

Read MoreClose

The extension is attached by a connecting-corridor on the west side of the main house. This enables the residents to switch their mindset before entering into the other living space, and the common garden maintains a proper sense of distance.

By relying on the main house for the large kitchen, bathroom, and future children’s room, only a few functions for a living space are required for the extended part. The living spaces are aggregated into a simple continuous structure, which consists of small, 2m high, U-shaped bearing walls. A V-beam roof truss is made with 62mm panels and structural plywood on both sides, and it is topped with a 69mm thin roof. By overlapping the bearing walls and the V-beam frame, and by using a variety of finishes, contrasting spaces are created and a sense of scale in the vertical direction is born in the flat house. By doing so, as the residents’ living scenes unfold, light and air freely circulate in the space, and the people’s lines-of-sight extend beyond the area in a state of freedom. We intended to leave a rich blank space that fosters the imaginations of the residents.

This timber house is about different ways of perceiving the landscape surrounding it. There are two principal floors; one set 750mm below the earth, one 1500mm above. The ground floor consists of one single family room with a noticeably low horizontal ceiling. In this space there is a physical connection with the nature outside the continuous windows. The space above is the inverse. This floor is divided into four equal rooms with 6m high ceilings. The height defines the space. Large windows open to composed views of the wheat field. Whereas the ground floor is about connecting with the visceral nature of the context, the floor above is about observing nature – a more distant and cerebral activity.
